Iranian President Masoud Pejeshkian said that his country does not want to make nuclear weapons, but it will not give up its right to enrich uranium either. His statement came amid talks between Tehran and Washington starting in Switzerland this Sunday.
pageshkian Said, “America wants Iran not to make a nuclear bomb and this is not a new thing and we can also confirm in writing that we have no intention of making a nuclear bomb.”
According to the official presidency website, he added: “However, we will not give up our right to enrich, and the other party has no choice but to accept this right.”
Tehran adamant on nuclear rights
In the same context, Iran confirmed through its Foreign Ministry spokesperson that the situation in Lebanon, where Israel and Hezbollah are facing conflict, will be the “main topic” of talks with the US in Switzerland on Sunday under the Memorandum of Understanding to end the war in the Middle East.
“The Zionist regime is breaking its promises in Lebanon; this matter will be the main topic of today’s talks,” spokesman Esmail Baghai said, according to a video clip released by the IRNA news agency.
He further said, “The issue of making Iran’s frozen or restricted assets available is also on the agenda, apart from this there will also be a discussion related to issuing the necessary licenses for the sale of Iranian oil.”
Qatar will release $6 billion freeze fund
Tehran says $6 billion freeze is about to be released. President Massoud Pejeshkian said the terms of the memorandum were in favor of Tehran. Massoud Pezeshkian took aim at Benjamin Netanyahu, saying he “would be the first to be unhappy with the negotiations.”
According to Al Jazeera’s report, Masood Pejeshkian has given more information about the ongoing initial agreement with America. He said that Iran’s $6 billion funds currently frozen in Qatar will be returned to Tehran, so that the fighting can be ended.
“All the rules of the Memorandum of Understanding are in our favor, and the success of these talks and negotiations will be clear,” Tasnim news agency quoted Pejeshkian as saying. The Iranian President said that Donald Trump has finally recognized those rights which Washington was earlier trying to restrict. Pejeshkian further said, “Our $6 billion will be returned to Qatar.”
Meeting between Vance and Sharif
Meanwhile, Al Jazeera reported that ahead of talks with the Iranian delegation, US Vice President JD Vance, US Special Envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner met Pakistani mediators in Bergenstock, Switzerland. The American delegation was seen shaking hands with Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Army Chief Asim Munir.
Separately, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi said he met Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis in Bergenstock to discuss recent developments related to Iran.
“At this critical moment, it is important to give diplomacy every opportunity to succeed,” Grossi said. Earlier this month, the IAEA’s governing board passed a US-backed resolution calling on Iran to provide “full information” about its enriched uranium stocks and allow inspectors to verify them.
According to the agency, when Israel and the US attacked Iran in June last year, it had about 440 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60% purity — close to the level needed to make weapons.
