Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu does not miss the opportunity to describe his relationship with India as better. Therefore, he is seen claiming strong support between Delhi and Tel Aviv. Completing this effort once again, he was seen praising India in a conference in the West Bank. Netanyahu described India as a great power and talked about its unique relationship with Israel.
Netanyahu said in his press conference that in many parts of the world we face problems regarding our legitimacy, but this is not the case in India. There is tremendous support for Israel in India, really tremendous. He said that I think we have more followers (supporters) from India than anywhere else.
Netanyahu has praised openly before also
This is not the first time that Netanyahu has talked highly about his popularity in India. He had described his last trip to New Delhi with his wife Sara in 2018 as a ‘love fest’. He had said that Indians have a lot of respect for Israel.
During a program he said that there are some places where Israel is still respected. India’s population is 1.4 billion, and Israel is very popular there. Here PM Modi was welcomed with great affection. When I went to India with my wife, it was like a love fest.
Reason for lack of popularity in America?
The Israeli PM’s statement has come at a time when his popularity among the American people has seen a decline. According to a recent survey by the Pew Research Center released in April, 60% of American adults have a negative opinion of Israel. Last year this figure was 53%.
More than half of American adults (59%) have little or no confidence in Netanyahu to do the right thing in world affairs. Last year this figure was 52%. Netanyahu has blamed Pakistan for the decline in his popularity. In the same interview, he accused Pakistan of using social media to promote anti-Israel sentiment in American public opinion. He said that the countries which want to weaken the US-Israel alliance are manipulating social media.
