Nirjala Ekadashi fasting story: Nirjala Ekadashi fast of Shukla Paksha of Jyeshtha month is going to be observed tomorrow i.e. on 25th June. In the scriptures, this Ekadashi is considered to be the biggest and most virtuous Ekadashi. The fast of Nirjala Ekadashi is considered the most difficult, because in this fast one has to observe the fast without consuming water. Devotees observe waterless fast on this day and worship Shri Hari Vishnu with rituals.
There is a religious belief that by observing the fast of Nirjala Ekadashi, one attains the virtue of all the 24 Ekadashi fasts. When this Ekadashi falls in Adhikamaas, then this fast provides the virtuous results of 26 Ekadashi fasts. This year Adhikamaas was observed in the month of Jyeshtha itself. In such a situation, whoever observes Nirjala Ekadashi fast tomorrow, will get the virtuous results of 26 Ekadashi fasts. On this day, during the puja, be sure to recite the Vrat Katha. The fast story of Nirjala Ekadashi is related to Pandu’s son Bhim, hence it is also called Bhimseni Ekadashi, so let’s read the fast story of Nirjala Ekadashi.
Story of Nirjala Ekadashi
According to the story of Nirjala Ekadashi, once Bhimsen said to Vedvyas ji that Mother Kunti and all my four brothers fast and take bath and donate, but I do not keep fast. In such a situation, how will I attain virtue? Bhima also told the reason for not being able to observe the fast. He said that I cannot live without food. Because I feel very hungry. Then Vyas ji said that you should keep fast on both the Ekadashi of the month.
On this Bhima said that it is not possible for me to live without food, because there is a fire called Vrik in my stomach, which cannot be calmed without food. To calm him down I have to eat several times a day. With folded hands he asked Vyas ji about a fast which has to be observed only once in a year and all the sins are erased. On this, Vyas ji said that the fast of Ekadashi of Jyeshtha Shukla Paksha is the only fast which is observed once in a year, which is called Nirjala Ekadashi.
Vyas ji told Bhima that during this fast neither drink water nor eat food. If you complete this fast as per the rules then you will get the virtue and salvation of all the Ekadashi fasts of the year. After this, on the day of Ekadashi of Jyeshtha Shukla Paksha, Bhima observed the fast of Nirjala Ekadashi as per the rituals and worshiped Lord Vishnu. Then the fast was broken on Dwadashi date. Due to this, Shri Hari blessed him and his sins were erased and he got virtuous results.
