
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has resigned from the post of Chief Minister. Siddaramaiah, who became the Chief Minister of the state for the second time, has made a record of serving as the Chief Minister for a total of 8 years. He entered the Assembly in 1983, served as Deputy Chief Minister twice and also served as Leader of the Opposition. Siddaramaiah was born on 3 August 1947, he is also known by his nickname Siddu.
He served as the 16th Chief Minister of Karnataka from 20 May 2023 to 28 May 2026. He had previously held that post for the first term from 2013 to 2018 and was only the second person to serve a full five-year term. Breaking the record of D Devraj Urs in January 2026 Karnataka Became the longest serving Chief Minister of India.
Siddaramaiah’s political journey
- Siddaramaiah, a resident of Siddaramahundi, Mysore, first contested the elections as an independent candidate from Chamundeshwari constituency in 1983 and won.
- He had handled the departments of Kannada and Culture, Animal Husbandry etc. in the Janata Party government.
- He served as the Deputy Chief Minister of the state in the governments of JH Patel (1996 to 1999) and Dharam Singh (2004 to 2005).
- He served as the Leader of the Opposition in the BJP governments during 2008–2013 and 2019–2023. Served as the Chief Minister of the Congress-led state government from 2013 to 2018 and from 2023 to now.
Won assembly elections nine times
Siddaramaiah has been elected MLA of Karnataka Assembly a total of 9 times in his political career. He was elected MLA from Chamundeshwari constituency in 1983 (as an independent candidate), from Chamundeshwari constituency in 1985 (as a Janata Party candidate), and from Chamundeshwari constituency in 1994 (as a Janata Dal candidate).
Won re-election from Chamundeshwari constituency in 2004 (as a JDS candidate), Chamundeshwari constituency in 2006 general elections, Varuna constituency in 2008 and 2013 (as a Congress candidate), Badami constituency in 2018 (as a Congress candidate) and re-elected from Varuna constituency in 2023 as a Congress candidate.
These allegations were made against Siddaramaiah government
In July 2023, several murders took place in the state, including an on-duty police constable who was crushed to death by a sand mafia truck. These included the double murder of Jain monk Nandi Maharaj of Belgaum, a worker named Venugopal in T Narsipur and the CEO and MD of a company in Bangalore. This led to criticism of the law and order situation in the state.
Along with this, Siddaramaiah’s name was also linked to the MUDA land allotment dispute. In August 2024, social activist T J Abraham filed an official complaint with the Governor of Karnataka, alleging that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had misused his position to influence the Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) in allotting 14 residential plots in Mysore to his wife BM.Parvathi. However Siddaramaiah has completely rejected these allegations.
