NIA’s big action on ISIS-AQIS network, raids on many locations across the country simultaneously

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Wednesday launched a search operation across the country in a case of spreading radicalism online. Their objective was to create an Islamic State in India through violent jihad against the democratically elected government by promoting the ideology of terrorist organizations like ISIS and AQIS. As part of the ongoing investigation of the case, NIA teams conducted simultaneous search operations at a total of 20 places in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Delhi (Union Territory).

Several digital devices were seized in Wednesday’s search. Forensic examination of these devices will be done to get more clues about the conspiracy to spread radicalism. So far 11 accused and one minor have been arrested in this case. NIA took over the investigation of this case from Vijayawada Police in May this year.

Materials related to terrorist organizations were found during the search.

Vijayawada (Andhra Pradesh) police had registered this case in March after searching the house of main accused Rahmatullah Sharif Mohammed. During the search, objectionable material related to banned terrorist organizations AQIS (Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent) and ISIS (Islamic State) was recovered. The places where searches were conducted on Wednesday were selected on the basis of detailed technical analysis of the digital devices seized earlier, connections of the arrested accused and other information obtained from the investigation.

The NIA is working to identify other people involved in the conspiracy to destabilize the country and establish ‘caliphate’. The agency has found that the arrested accused and their associates were brainwashing easily influenced youth across the country through violent Jihadi content and misinformation. The accused were also in online contact with their handlers sitting abroad to propagate Jihadi ideology and carry forward the anti-India conspiracy.
