The political battle has intensified in Bengal over the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill and Public Safety Bill. TMC MP Mahua Moitra on Friday launched a scathing attack on the BJP government over the proposed Uniform Civil Code and a controversial public safety bill. He alleged that the ruling government was trying to “uproot” the opposition through intimidation, divisiveness and harsh policies.
According to PTI news TMC supremo and former chief minister Mamata Banerjee Speaking to reporters after a meeting at TMC’s Kalighat home, Mahua Moitra alleged that the BJP government has launched an “operation” aimed at weakening TMC at the grassroots by preventing party workers from holding meetings and rallies.
He claimed that an operation is going on to uproot and destroy Trinamool Congress. Activists are allegedly being threatened with false cases and police action for holding the programme.
Attempt to suppress the voice of the opposition
Comparing it to the time of Emergency, Mahua Moitra said political voices cannot be suppressed forever and appealed to party workers not to be afraid of the administration ahead of TMC’s annual Martyrs’ Rally on July 21.
He said, “The voice of lakhs of voters cannot be suppressed. People could not be suppressed even during the Emergency. Martyrs’ Day program will be held on July 21, and our leaders will show us the way forward.
However, the sharpest attack was on the state’s proposed West Bengal Public Safety and Control of Anti-Social Activities Bill, 2026, which Moitra described as more stringent than some of India’s most controversial security laws.
Stricter than MISA and UAPA
Showing a copy of the proposed law, he claimed that it is “much more stringent” than MISA and UAPA during the Emergency.

“It is being said that a person can be detained without trial for up to a year. There are no adequate judicial safeguards. This gives too much power to the police based on mere suspicion,” he alleged, and warned that the law could have far-reaching consequences on civil liberties in the state.
Subhendu Adhikari’s BJP government in West Bengal is all set to introduce the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill in the state during the ongoing budget session of the Assembly on Monday.
Shubhendu will present the bill in the assembly on Monday
Sources said that apart from the UCC, the government is also going to introduce two bills on Monday to deal strictly with public disorder, vandalism and attacks on policemen and government employees.
One of these bills seeks to amend the West Bengal Maintenance of Public Order Act, 1972, which deals with rioting, arson, looting, use of explosives and other acts threatening public order.
The second bill is a new law, named the West Bengal Public Safety and Control of Anti-Social Activities Bill, 2026, which proposes to strengthen public safety and deal with anti-social activities on a more comprehensive scale.
BJP rejected the allegation
However, BJP rejected these allegations and accused TMC of spreading fear after losing power. Senior BJP leaders said the proposed law is aimed at tackling organized crime, political violence and anarchy, which allegedly flourished during the previous government.
The BJP leader said that TMC is uneasy because for the first time there is a government which is determined to take action against the criminal syndicate and restore the rule of law. The purpose of the bill is to strengthen public safety, not to restrict democratic rights.”
