New crisis in TMC after defeat in Bengal, MLA trapped in ‘fake signature’ case, CID starts investigation

May 29, 2026 by Uma Shankar

After the defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections, Trinamool Congress is now facing a signature crisis. After receiving complaints of ‘disparity’ in the signatures of some MLAs, CID has started investigation. The assembly has lodged a complaint at Hare Street Police Station regarding the difference in signature. Based on that, CID is helping Kolkata Police in the investigation.

CID team to check signature TMC Went to the MLAs’ houses. A handwriting expert was also with him. CID had taken an expert with it to check whether his signatures were fake or not. After Chowringhee MLA Nayana Banerjee, Beleghata MLA Kunal Ghosh, Canning East MLA Baharul Islam, CID also reached the house of former minister and Bolpur MLA Chandranath Sinha on Friday morning.

Why are there allegations of fake signature?

Trinamool had to present a proposal to make Shobhandeb Chatterjee the leader of the opposition. Trinamool presented that proposal with the signatures of 70 MLAs. Questions have been raised regarding that signature. The MLA himself is saying that he did not sign it. Then who did it? After the election results came out on May 4, Mamata Banerjee called a meeting of the winning MLAs at her home in Kalighat on May 6. That day, the MLAs raised their hands in support of the party’s proposal and said that party leader Mamata should decide who will be the leader, deputy leader and chief whip of the legislative party.

After this, Trinamool Congress announced that Shobhandeb Chatterjee would be the leader of the opposition, Nayana Banerjee and Asima Patra would be sub-group leaders and Firhad Hakim would be the chief whip. In this regard, a letter signed by the party’s General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee was sent to the Assembly, but it was not accepted.

The reason is that the election of the legislature party leader or other office bearers should have taken place in the legislature party meeting, which was not the case with Trinamool Congress. After leaving the meeting on May 6, many MLAs told the media that Mamata Banerjee has been given the responsibility to decide who will be the leader of the legislative party and other office bearers, but later a letter was sent to the Assembly in this regard, but the Assembly Secretariat rejected the letter.

CID investigation started on ‘fake signatures’ of TMC MLAs

But there has been a ‘controversy’ regarding the signature of Canning East MLA Baharul Islam. Although it was signed in the meeting on May 19, the letter submitted in the Assembly is dated May 6. Baharul was not present in the meeting held at Mamta’s house that day. Baharul said, “As long as the investigation is going on, I will not say much about this to the media. I will just say that the investigators want to know where I was on May 6? I told them that I was at home (in Bhangra) that day. I was shown the signature of a meeting that day. I told them that I had not gone to any meeting that day. I was at home because of the post-poll violence.”

The CID team was at Nayana Banerjee’s house for a long time on Thursday. Nayana claimed that she had videographed it. He said that this is not an assembly paper. This is our party’s paper. We took the decision together on behalf of the party. We did not sign it because there was no space on the paper.

However, Trinamool has denied this allegation. MLA Shobhandeb Chatterjee said, this is actually being harassed. MLAs are being intimidated. Nayana was told that the signature was not hers, but Nayana had signed it. On the other hand, Minister Dilip Ghosh said, the entire government was fake.
