NEET Re-Exam 2026: Telegram blocked but why not WhatsApp? this is the reason

June 17, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Before the NEET Re Exam 2026 on June 21, the government has imposed a temporary ban on the messaging platform Telegram. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has issued an order under Section 69A of the IT Act on the basis of the recommendation of NTA. Due to this order, Telegram has been temporarily blocked till June 22. Due to this, many questions are arising in the minds of people like why only Telegram and not WhatsApp? The government’s reasoning in this case is clear, it is based on how the platform works. What role did Telegram play in a large fraud network targeting troubled medical students?

Why Telegram, but not WhatsApp? These are the reasons

According to the report of Moneycontrol, the most important thing in the investigation of paper leak case was the message editing feature of Telegram. According to NTA, fraudsters used this feature to create false evidence of paper leak. On the other hand, WhatsApp’s system is more secure, the government has not accused WhatsApp of playing such a role in this investigation.

WhatsApp accounts are linked to phone numbers, and while they can spread misinformation, they do not have the large-scale public broadcasting and searchable channel system that Telegram does. Large-scale public broadcasting on WhatsApp is limited and it is primarily designed for conversations between acquaintances. Officials have concluded that the specific networks under investigation were based on Telegram and not WhatsApp.

Message editing: The administrator running the Telegram channel used to edit the old messages and insert the question paper, because the app provides the facility to edit the messages while maintaining the old time. Just edit is written in the message, taking advantage of this feature the fraudsters used to share the screenshot of the proof that the paper was available on the app before the paper.

Public Channel: WhatsApp focuses on private conversations and closed groups linked to phone numbers, while Telegram is a broadcasting powerhouse that can send messages to millions of people at once.

WhatsApp ecosystem is more limited

The government has not accused WhatsApp of playing such a role in this investigation. WhatsApp account is linked to the mobile number. Although misinformation can be spread on it, it does not have a large-scale public broadcasting ecosystem like Telegram. Large-scale public broadcasting is limited on WhatsApp and it is primarily designed for conversations between acquaintances.
