NCP merger stuck, brainstorming on NDA entry… What political game is going on in Maharashtra?

July 20, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Will there be a merger of both NCPs? Will Sharad Pawar’s NCP join the NDA before the delimitation bill comes or will it join with Ajit Pawar’s NCP and become a part of the NDA? According to sources in Maharashtra politics, discussions are going on regarding NCP (Sharad Pawar) joining NDA. However, at present the biggest hurdle remains the merger formula between the two NCP factions.

According to sources, Sunetra Pawar and her camp are not in favor of immediate patchup or merger with Supriya Sule. The biggest reason for this is said to be differences regarding leadership and control over the organization. It is being said that Sunetra Pawar fears that if Sharad Pawar’s group merges with NCP, then the command of the party will gradually go into the hands of Supriya Sule.

It is being told that Ajit Pawar NCP Even inside, two factions are visible. On one hand, the camp of Sunetra Pawar and Parth Pawar is believed to be active, while on the other hand, the camp of Sunil Tatkare and Praful Patel is said to be active.

Clash over NCP leadership

According to sources, Sunetra Pawar wishes that she should have the leadership role in Maharashtra and the command of the organization should be in her hands at the national level also. They also had the right to make appointments and select officials in the organization. Apart from this, in the event of cabinet reshuffle in the government, he should also have the right to take the final decision on who should get a place in key departments and the cabinet, including the Finance Ministry. However, these conditions have not been agreed upon yet, due to which there is a deadlock in the talks.

Meanwhile, another option is also under discussion. Sources claim that if the Delimitation Bill comes in the Parliament, then the NCP (Sharad Pawar) party should support it directly or indirectly. After this, after the Parliament session ends, Sharad Pawar’s party can be included in the NDA as a separate ally.

Will NCP (SP) support NDA?

Under this formula, first Sharad Pawar’s party will support the NDA and later, if the differences between the two NCP factions reduce, then in the future an attempt can be made for their merger or compromise or will join the NDA with its independent existence. However, no one from both the camps of NCP is speaking openly on all these formulas.

Maharashtra State President of NCP (Sharad Pawar) Shashikant Shinde has once again clarified the party’s stand regarding the Delimitation Bill. He said that the party can consider supporting this bill on the basis of conditions.

Shashikant Shinde said that if the Delimitation Bill is brought keeping in mind women’s reservation and women’s interests and there is no political interest in it, then NCP (Sharad Pawar) can consider it positively. He clarified that the final decision on this issue will be taken by MP Supriya Sule, but before that a detailed discussion will be held within the party. He said that the party will decide its final stand only after collective discussion.

NDA eyes Sharad Pawar’s NCP

Maharashtra President of NCP Ajit Pawar Party Sunil Tatkare also said that Supriya Sule has made it clear that when Ajit Pawar was alive, the merger talks were going on. If he had stayed for fifteen more days, perhaps the merger would have happened, but since then there has been no talk regarding the merger.

Senior leader of Shinde faction of Shiv Sena and cabinet minister in Maharashtra government, Sanjay Shirsat has given a big statement regarding the possible merger of the two factions of NCP.

Sanjay Shirsat said that at present there is no possibility of merger of the two NCP factions because the conditions of both the parties are not acceptable to each other. Looking at the current situation, it does not seem possible for both the groups to come together and join the NDA, but Sharad Pawar’s NCP can join the NDA separately.

Is the political mathematics of Maharashtra going to change?

Shirsath said that no decision will be taken today. Both the nationalists will not come together. Some of the conditions for coming together are not acceptable to both. Such is the overall picture (situation). Therefore, they can be separate if… merged (joined), but will not merge by coming together.

According to sources, however, it is considered certain that NCP Sharad Pawar’s party will join NDA, but how it will join is being worked out.

Working President of Sharad Pawar’s NCP Supriya Sule has given a statement in Delhi that there is no talk of merger as of now. When Ajit Dada was our leader, there was a discussion about merger, perhaps if he had stayed for 15 days, merger could have happened. There is no discussion today after grandfather’s death.
