
Indian Navy’s Sail Training Ship INS Sudarshini reached the Port of Baltimore, Maryland on June 26 as part of an important maritime operation named ‘Lokayan 26’. During the voyage from Norfolk, the ship passed through the historic Chesapeake and Delaware (C&D) Canal and passed under the major bridges of the Mid-Atlantic. The arrival of INS Sudarshini in Baltimore reflects India’s rich maritime heritage and the strong bonds of friendship and cooperation between the Indian Navy and the US Navy.
During her stay, the ship will participate in maritime activities and community outreach programs ahead of the ‘Sail250 Maryland’ celebration. The ‘Sail250 Maryland’ celebration is being held in celebration of America’s 250th anniversary. Before reaching Baltimore, INS Sudarshini participated in the ‘Sail 250 Virginia’ celebrations at Norfolk between 19-23 June. It included participation in the ‘Parade of Sail’ and ‘City Crew Parade’ representing India along with big ships from all over the world.
Traveled 13,000 nautical miles in 5 months
The voyage, covering more than 13,000 nautical miles in five months from Kochi to Norfolk, is a testament to India’s maritime traditions and the spirit of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’, which promotes friendship, cooperation and mutual trust across the oceans.
SAIL Training Ship INS Sudarshini
INS Sudarshini is a sail training ship built by Goa Shipyard Limited for the Indian Navy. This ship is the ‘sister ship’ of INS Tarangini, which was inducted into the Navy in 1997. It was designed by United Kingdom naval architect and yacht designer Colin Mudie. INS Sudarshini is a 54 meter long ship, which can carry five officers, 31 sailors and 30 cadets for training. It can stay in the sea for at least 20 days at a time.

During her voyages, INS Sudarshini has visited many important ports, demonstrating the Indian Navy’s commitment towards maritime diplomacy and training. The ship has visited many other ports including Bali in Indonesia, Manila in the Philippines, Da Nang in Vietnam, Bangkok and Phuket in Thailand, Singapore, Salalah in Oman, Safaga in Egypt, Valletta in Malta, Cette in France, Casablanca in Morocco and Las Palmas in the Canary Islands of Spain.
