
Delhi LG Sardar TS Sandhu visited Navjeevan Vihar on Tuesday and reviewed the ‘Zero Waste Colony’ model. During the visit, the LG also inspected the colony’s Reduce-Reuse-Recycle (RRR) centre, decentralized aerobic composting units, strict source separation practices and locally installed rainwater harvesting system. The LG praised this wonderful community initiative which shows how citizens can work together to create a cleaner, greener and more sustainable urban environment.
on this occasion lg Directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to actively promote and support other Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) to adopt this self-sustaining model.
Instructions given to MCD to adopt zero waste model
He directed the MCD to explore a dedicated funding system to replicate such decentralized zero-waste and composting projects in the colonies also. Apart from this, LG directed that Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funding should be used systematically to create essential infrastructure like Aerobin and RRR centers in these areas.

The LG said that government agencies cannot achieve sustainable waste management without active contribution and participation of citizens. He stressed on the team spirit and said that the journey from rags to riches starts from home. Noting that when such best practices are emerging from our own people, there is no need to look towards other cities or countries for solutions, the LG urged RWAs across Delhi to prioritize source segregation at the household level.

The LG highly appreciated the dedicated efforts of the RWAs and local residents. He expressed satisfaction that under the active leadership of the community, the colony has maintained this decentralized model for almost eight years and has successfully diverted more than 10 lakh kilograms of waste from Delhi’s overcrowded landfill sites.

Reiterating the government’s commitment, the LG said that such collaborative work by RWAs needs full institutional support and help. He appealed to all stakeholders to recognize their legal and environmental mandates, use resources wisely, and work together to build a safe, inclusive and world-class developed Delhi.
