Madhya Pradesh’s Datia BJP leader Narottam Mishra has appealed to the party workers to maintain peace and not hold any kind of protest. BJP has not given him ticket for Datia assembly by-election. Former Home Minister Narottam Mishra said that the party’s decision should be respected. He urged the workers not to protest by pouring petrol or kerosene. He said that differences should be expressed within the party in an appropriate manner. His appeal came because 8 policemen were injured in the violent demonstration by his supporters and there was a jam on the highway for 11 hours.

Datia District Magistrate Swapnil Wankhede said that the jam started on Friday evening and continued till around 5 am on Saturday morning, causing a 20-25 km long traffic jam and affecting Datia, Jhansi, Shivpuri and Gwalior districts. He told that the traffic jam continued till 5 in the morning, that is, many buses and ambulances remained stuck in the jam for almost eleven hours.

The administration tried all night

The District Magistrate said that the administration tried throughout the night to convince the protesters to remove the jam peacefully. However, when talks failed, the protesters resorted to stone pelting, following which the police had to use tear gas. According to Wankhede, the protesters later entered an office building and kept pelting stones at the policemen from inside.

According to Wankhede, the protesters later entered an office building and kept throwing stones at the policemen from inside. He said that eight policemen including SDPO, Superintendent of Police (SP) and Additional SP were seriously injured. Despite wearing a helmet, Wankhede also suffered a head injury. Many police vehicles and trucks were damaged during the violence.

Tried to spoil the normal situation in the city

Wankhede said that instead of lathicharge, the administration resorted to talks and tear gas to disperse the crowd. Datia Superintendent of Police Mayur Khandelwal said that more than 3,000 protesters tried to disturb the normal situation in the city by blocking the highway and closing the markets.

He said, “The collector and I repeatedly asked them to leave and end the ‘chakka jam’. At around 4 in the morning, they suddenly threw stones at the police. The police fired tear gas shells, after which the stone pelting intensified.”
