May 28, 2026 by Uma Shankar

The politics of Karnataka seems to be reaching its peak again. Amidst speculations about change of power going on for several months, it is being said about Siddaramaiah that he may resign from the post of Chief Minister on Thursday. As soon as the news of his resignation came to light, demonstrations were started by his supporters in the state. Meanwhile, before resigning, the report related to caste census in the state was submitted to the Chief Minister, which he has accepted. In this report, Muslim community has been declared number one.

Amid speculations of resignation, CM Siddaramaiah has accepted the Karnataka Caste Census report, this report had remained a topic of discussion for the last 9 years. But the big thing is that just a day before resigning from the post of Chief Minister, he unexpectedly received the “Social and Educational Survey Report” prepared by the State Backward Classes Commission in his office at Vidhan Soudha.

Caste wise Social, Educational and Economic Survey Report (Caste Census), which was in discussion for a long time. Now according to this report, Muslims are the largest community in the state. Backward Classes Commission Chairman Madhusudan Naik submitted a socio-economic survey report to CM Siddaramaiah. According to this caste census, Muslims are the largest community in the state. According to the report, 14 percent of the total population of the state, i.e. 75.25 lakh people are from Muslim community.

Caste wise population information

The Muslim community is the largest and most influential community in Karnataka, whose population is between 75 to 80 lakh. After this, Veerashaiva Lingayat community is the second largest community in Karnataka, whose population is between 60 to 65 lakh and constitutes 11% of the total population. At the same time, Vokkaliga community is the third largest community, and its population is between 55 to 60 lakhs and constitutes 10% of the total population.

Details of caste-wise population have been given in the 300-page report submitted to the government. The Kuruba community is the fourth largest community in the state, with a population of between 40 and 45 lakh and constitutes 8% of the population.

Earlier the report was to be submitted on 30th May

Speaking to the media after handing over the caste census report to the Chief Minister, Backward Classes Commission Chairman Madhusudan Naik said, “All the reports are complete and it is not possible to give any detailed information about them. The report related to OBC is complete. It has nothing to do with the resignation. It took time to translate the report. It was already decided to submit the report on May 30. However, due to May 29 being a holiday, it was submitted today itself. This report It is of 300 pages.”

He said, “Our survey has been completed and we cannot do anything about those who did not participate. It is possible that due to this the figures may be less. We have submitted the report honestly. We hope that the report will be accepted as soon as possible.”

Caste formed on the report of Havanur Commission

Muslim is a religion and Muslims are not socially neglected. Therefore, there is no need to give them reservation. In the year 1974, the Havanur Commission report had refused to give reservation to Lingayats, Christians and Muslims. After challenging it in the High Court and then in the Supreme Court, in 1985 the Supreme Court said that the Havanur Commission report itself states that Muslims are educationally, economically and socially backward. Therefore, the Commission said that Muslims should be treated like all backward classes and should be made eligible for reservation.

Later, the Venkataswamy Commission and the Chinnappa Reddy Commission also considered Muslims as a backward class. Therefore, according to sources in the Backward Classes Commission, the Kantaraju Commission and the Jayaprakash Hegde-led commission considered Muslims as a caste.
