
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has busted a gang smuggling gold across the border in Delhi. This gang was involved in smuggling of gold from foreign countries to the north-eastern states of the country as well as Delhi. The gang used different vehicles to smuggle gold.
Metal melting factory caught in Delhi
To avoid detection, the gang had arranged for the movement of its gang members at different times for smuggling of gold. Besides, a furnace for melting gold and metal was installed in a densely populated area of Delhi. At present, 8 people have been arrested from different states for gold smuggling.
5 arrested from Delhi and Bengal
On June 26, 2026, DRI officials caught two courier delivery persons at New Cooch Behar Railway Station in West Bengal and Mansi Junction in Bihar. 2 kg gold bars were hidden near them. Also, two persons were arrested in Delhi with about 1.2 kg of smuggled gold. These actions led to the discovery of an illegal gold melting factory in Delhi.
DRI officials have also detained a woman going from Mizoram Sairang to Kolkata. 20 gold bars smuggled from abroad were recovered from him. These gold bars had markings in foreign languages. His weight was about 3.3 kg. The gold was hidden in a belt specially made for it.
Action in Chennai and Bengaluru also
In Chennai too, DRI has unearthed a racket of illegal movement of foreign exchange through domestic air cargo consignments and organized smuggling of gold and silver into India. DRI recovered 7,58,500 US dollars and 35,00,000 Thai baht in foreign currency from three persons. Its actual price tag is around Rs 8.15 crore.
DRI investigation has revealed that Thai foreign currency was being smuggled out of India in different ways. It was going to be used to smuggle precious metals into India. During the same investigation, a person receiving foreign exchange was caught with 1.8 kg of gold at Bengaluru airport while returning from Dubai. About 42 kilograms of silver, 700 grams of gold jewelery and Rs 26.67 lakh in Indian currency were recovered from the residence of the arrested person.
8 people have been arrested so far
In total, in all the operations of DRI, about 9 kg of gold smuggled from abroad, 42 kg of silver, foreign currency worth Rs 8.15 crore and Indian currency worth Rs 26.67 lakh have been seized. A total of 8 people have been arrested during this period.
