June 17, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Muharram Significance: Muharram is one of the sacred months of the Islamic calendar (Hijri year). Its first 10 days are called mourning. Muharram is not a festival, but the sacred month of the Islamic calendar, which is related to the battle of Karbala and the martyrdom of Imam Hussain. The holy month of Muharram is considered to be the beginning of the Islamic calendar. The new year in Islam begins from the month of Muharram.

This is the first month of the Islamic calendar. Like Eid and Bakrid, the date of beginning of this holy month is decided after the sighting of the moon. Today is the first date of Mahe Muharram in India. The tenth day of Muharram (Yaume Ashura) is on Friday, June 26. According to Islamic belief, no fighting of any kind is carried out in the month of Muharram. In Islam it is considered a month of mourning.

The battle of Karbala took place in Muharram

In Islam, marriage, buying a new house or any kind of celebration is prohibited during the month of Muharram. This month not only marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year, but also inspires sacrifice, patience, struggle for truth and justice. According to Islamic beliefs, Muharram is considered to be the same month in which the battle was fought in Karbala, Iraq.

That’s why it is considered a month of mourning

In this war, Prophet Mohammad’s grandson Hazrat Imam Hussain was martyred along with his 72 companions. Therefore, in this holy month, Muslims around the world, especially the Shia community and in many places the Sunni community also remember the sacrifices of Imam Hussain and his family and follow traditions. Religious meetings are held in this month. Fresh ones are taken out. Special prayers are performed on the 10th day of Ashura. Many Muslims also keep fast on this day.

Black clothes are worn during Muharram. Mourning and condolences are expressed for Imam Hussain by wearing black clothes. It is an Islamic belief that after the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, his family members also wore black clothes in mourning.
