Karbala Battle: The holy month of Muharram is going on. According to the Islamic calendar (Hijri), this is the first month of the new year in Islam. This month of Muharram is considered a month of mourning, because it is the Islamic belief that in this month a battle was fought in Karbala, Iraq, in which the grandson of Prophet Mohammad, Imam Hussain and his 72 companions were martyred.
If we look into the pages of history, we come to know about many battles, but the battle of Karbala was not fought for any piece of land. This war was fought to save one’s conscience. This is the story of the sacrifice of Imam Hussain, who refused to bow down to oppression and gave up his martyrdom. Even today, after 1346 years, the mention of the battle of Karbala brings tears to everyone’s eyes.

According to Islamic beliefs, when Islam was in its initial phase, the Caliph i.e. the leader was chosen through mutual consultation and consent (Shura), but a ruler named Muawiya changed this rule. He declared his son as his successor. Muawiya’s son’s name was Yazid. His nature and lifestyle were completely contrary to the teachings of Mohammad Sahib.
Yazid started intimidating people with the power of his power and getting them to agree to his wishes. Iman Hussain was a very noble and respectable person. They did not accept Yazid’s words and his authority. Imam Hussain clearly said that he will not accept the rule of a person who changes the basic principles of Islam. This was not a political fight, but a war between right and wrong, where even silence was considered a crime.
Invitation and deception to come to Kufa
The people of Kufa city of Iraq had written a letter to Imam Hussain calling him to lead them (people) and end the atrocities of Yazid. Imam Hussain left for there along with 72 loyal companions of his family. But, before the Imam could reach, Yazid created fear among the people by sending one of his cruel officers, Ubaidullah Ibn Ziyad.
Its effect was that the people who had invited Imam Hussain turned against the grandson of Prophet Mohammad due to fear of Yazid’s power. When Imam Hussain reached the scorching plains of Karbala, a huge army of Yazid surrounded him. On 10 Muharram, the Imam and his 72 companions chose the path of sacrifice instead of succumbing to oppression. In this war, along with the Imam, his young son, his brother and even his 6-month old innocent child were martyred.
