Political turmoil has intensified regarding Rajya Sabha elections in Madhya Pradesh. The contest has become interesting after Bharatiya Janata Party made Mahesh Kevat the candidate for the third seat. Meanwhile, Congress has also intensified its strategy and is constantly keeping an eye on its MLAs to keep them united.
Congress candidate Meenakshi Natarajan and BJP candidate Mahesh Kewat will file their nominations for the Rajya Sabha elections today. After the announcement of BJP’s third candidate, now all eyes are on electoral mathematics and political maneuvers. According to sources, Congress is considering the strategy of taking its MLAs to another state.
This is often called ‘barabandi’ (keeping MLAs together so that they cannot be broken up). There is talk that MLAs can be sent to Telangana. Since Meenakshi Natarajan is currently in-charge of Telangana Congress, there is a lot of discussion about this possibility in political circles. However, Congress has not yet made any official announcement in this regard.
BJP has 164 seats and Congress has 64 seats.
Based on the current composition of the Assembly, 228 MLAs are eligible to vote in the Rajya Sabha elections. To win, a candidate will need 58 votes. BJP has 164 seats, while Congress has 64 seats. Bharat Adivasi Party (BAP) also has one MLA in the assembly. MLAs representing Vijaypur constituency will not be able to cast their votes.
BJP strong, but stuck on third seat
BJP has 116 votes, which is enough to easily win two seats. After this, the party is left with 48 additional votes, while 58 votes are needed to win the third seat. In such a situation, BJP will have to arrange for at least 10 more votes. Congress, on the other hand, has 63 effective votes; With the support of BAP MLA, this number can be 64, which is more than the number required for victory. For this reason the contest for the third seat is being considered very interesting. Political analysts believe that cross-voting or additional support can decide the outcome of this seat. At the same time, now everyone’s eyes are on the nomination process and the voting to be held.
Who is Mahesh Kewat?
