Umar Khalid has approached the Delhi High Court for interim bail in the 2020 Delhi riots case. Delhi High Court will hear tomorrow the petition of Umar Khalid, who has been in jail for almost 5 years. Actually, after the Karkardooma Court rejected the interim bail petition, Omar Khalid has challenged the order of the lower court. Umar Khalid had sought interim bail of 15 days to attend the 40th anniversary of his deceased uncle and take care of his ailing mother. Let us tell you that Khalid also has to undergo surgery as per his demand.
On Tuesday, Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Sameer Bajpai of Karkardooma Court had rejected the bail application of Umar Khalid. The court rejected Khalid’s application and said that the argument given for bail is not a valid basis. While hearing the case, Judge Bajpai said that although Khalid has been granted interim bail several times before, every bail application and its reasons are different, hence bail cannot be granted every time.
Regarding the health of Umar Khalid’s mother and the surgery, the court commented that since it appears to be a normal procedure and Khalid’s five sisters and father are present to take care of her.
Mother’s surgery declared normal
Regarding the mother’s surgery, the court said, “This surgery is very simple, that is, it only involves removal of lumps and it seems that there is no scope for any real need or help from the applicant’s side. Therefore, not considering these reasons as correct, the court did not consider it appropriate to grant the relief sought by the applicant.”
Umar came out on bail in December 2025
Last time Khalid got bail to attend his sister’s wedding in December 2025. JNU alumnus Khalid and activist Sharjeel Imam are among the 20 people booked by the Special Cell of Delhi Police under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for conspiring in the 2020 Delhi riots.
