Under the SIR campaign being run for voter revision, the Election Commission has released the draft voter list of four states. Names of more than 22 lakh people have been removed from the list under the SIR campaign in Odisha, Manipur, Mizoram and Sikkim. The Commission says that those whose names have been removed from the draft list will be given an opportunity to get their names included again. After this the final voter list of these states will be released.
in June last year election Commission had started the Special Intensive Modification (SIR) campaign. This campaign has been completed in states like Bihar, Bengal, Assam, and UP.
How many people’s names have been deleted from SIR so far?
Under special revision, names of 65 lakh voters in Bihar were deleted. Similarly, names of 37 lakh voters were deleted in West Bengal. In UP also, names of 25 lakh voters have been deleted from the voter list. In total 13 states, names of about 6 crore people have been removed from the voter list under SIR.
At present, the Election Commission is running SIR campaign to prepare the voter list afresh in 16 states and 4 union territories. The states where these campaigns are being run include Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Haryana, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha, Punjab, Sikkim, Tripura, Telangana and Uttarakhand.
Apart from this, SIR campaign is also being run in National Capital Region Delhi, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu.
Why is SIR being done?
SIR campaign is being run to check the validity of voters. The bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant of the Supreme Court had declared it valid in one of its decisions in May 2026. The Supreme Court said that the Commission has the right to revise the voter list.
Recently, 23 opposition parties included in the India Alliance have written a letter to the Chief Justice regarding the SIR. These parties allege that the SIR process is not transparent. Opposition parties say that the SIR campaign is being run in an arbitrary manner.
