Amidst the increasing demand for artificial intelligence and data centres, big news has come to light regarding memory chip manufacturing in India. Union Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnav has indicated that in the coming times, new companies can invest in making memory chips in India. He said that there is a huge shortage of memory chips across the world, due to which the need to set up new plants has increased. The government is now preparing to take the semiconductor sector to the next level.
Investment opportunities increased due to memory chip shortage
According to PTI report, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that the demand for high bandwidth memory chips is increasing rapidly across the world. In particular, the expansion of AI data centers has pushed the need for memory chips to record levels. For this reason, a huge gap is being seen between supply and demand at the global level. According to Vaishnav, this situation has emerged as a big opportunity for India and new companies can invest in memory chip manufacturing here. He said that not only new investments but existing companies are also working towards increasing their production capacity so that the increasing demand can be met.
Many projects including Micron are giving initial results
Vaishnav said that the efforts started to promote semiconductor manufacturing in India are now yielding results. Giving an example, he said that the first unit of Micron started commercial production from February 28 this year, while the second unit started construction work from March 31. According to him, there is still a serious supply crisis in the field of memory chips, hence it is necessary to increase the production capacity. He indicated that more FAB and ATMP units can be established in India in the coming time. This will strengthen the country’s electronics and chip supply chain and reduce dependence on imports.
Focus on designs and machines in Semiconductor Mission 2.0
The Union Minister said that work on India Semicon Mission 2.0 is going on at a fast pace. In this new phase, chip design will be given the highest priority. Along with this, the government will also pay attention to the manufacturing and design of those machines which are used in making semiconductors. Vaishnav said that emphasis will also be on increasing domestic production of complex chemicals and special gases. He also said that the vast technical talent available in India, strong power grid and growing potential of renewable energy are attracting global companies. This is the reason why large-scale investment in data centers and AI infrastructure is moving towards India, which is expected to give new impetus to the semiconductor industry.
