Iran is currently going through a serious economic crisis. Food items have become so expensive in the country that it is becoming difficult for common people to buy them. According to the report published in Etemad newspaper, farming and poultry businesses are closing, jobs are being lost and people’s lives are becoming increasingly difficult. In such a situation, a big question is arising that why a country which can make modern missiles is not able to provide cheap food and essential goods to its people.
Iran’s former Industry Minister Mostafa Hashemitaba has raised questions on the economic policies of the government. In an article written in the newspaper Shark, he said that the cost of farming in the country has increased very rapidly. According to him, the price of 50 kg of triple phosphate fertilizer increased from 30 lakh riyals to 7 crore riyals in a few months. If seen in Indian rupees, 10 lakh Iranian Rials are equal to approximately Rs 72.81. That means the price of fertilizer increased almost 24 times. The price of other fertilizers has also increased by more than 1100%.
Crisis on farms and poultry farms due to cost of fertilizer
Hashemitaba said that due to expensive fertilizers and increasing expenses, many farms and poultry farms have been closed. This has directly affected the food items. The prices of fruits, vegetables and meat have increased rapidly. According to many newspapers of Tehran, the price of chicken has reached 15 lakh toman (about Rs 1900) per kg. This amount is equal to about one-tenth of the monthly earnings of an ordinary labourer.
According to the report of Etemad newspaper, after the end of the war, the biggest blow to the people was inflation. Many people said that things used daily suddenly became so expensive that it became difficult to buy them. Tehran’s cafes and restaurants, where people used to go to relieve stress, are now themselves facing financial crisis.
Questions raised on former President also
Hashemitba also mentioned the government of former President Ibrahim Raisi. He said that in September 2023, the government had claimed that 1 lakh electric cars would be manufactured by March. But later it was revealed that the model shown was almost the only car in the factory.
He questioned why Iran is not able to make cars when it can make accurate missiles. According to defense experts and Pentagon estimates, Iran spent more than Rs 1600 crore on missile and drone launches alone in the initial days of the conflict.
