After the defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections, TMC’s political cards are disintegrating, breaking and withering. The pair of two flowers which earlier stood with full strength, has now broken and fallen on the ground. Yesterday the legislative party broke into pieces. Now the parliamentary party is under watch. Meanwhile, rebel MLAs claim that Abhishek Banerjee is the reason for this condition of TMC. He was not taking responsibility for the defeat and big leaders were being insulted. That’s why the party broke, but the truth is also that the disintegration of TMC yesterday is not a matter of one day. Its foundation was laid exactly a month ago on May 4, when the results were coming.
A high profile meeting was allegedly held on May 22 at Banga Bhawan in Delhi. This meeting was between rebel Trinamool MLA Ritabrata Banerjee and the Chief Minister. Shubhendu Adhikari Was between. This alleged meeting was named as a coincidental meeting. From here the foundation of TMC’s disintegration was laid, and 58 MLAs established control over the party’s legislature party.
The MLAs chose Ritabrata Banerjee as their leader and also got its recognition from the Assembly Speaker. This rebellion formally drew the line of division in the party, which Mamata Banerjee had founded on January 1, 1998 after separating from the Congress.
Timeline of rebellion in TMC
- After the big defeat from BJP on May 4, strife started within TMC. Some MLAs of the party felt that only Abhishek Banerjee rules the party.
- In a meeting on May 6, Mamata Banerjee reportedly asked the MLAs to stand up and greet Abhishek Banerjee.
- In the meeting of May 19, Ritabrata Banerjee and Sandipan Saha raised questions on not taking action against Jahangir Khan who had withdrawn his candidature in Phalta. Senior MLA Kunal Ghosh also raised similar concerns, although he later distanced himself from the rebel camp.
- Ritabrata Banerjee went to Delhi on May 22 to complete the formalities after the end of his tenure as Rajya Sabha member.
- On May 22 itself, he reached Banga Bhawan in Delhi for lunch, where he met Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari.
- On May 25, Ritabrata Banerjee complained to the Assembly Speaker about forged signatures of the MLAs.
- On May 27, CID investigation into forged signatures started.
- On May 30, Abhishek Banerjee was attacked by a mob during his visit to Sonarpur.
- Mamata Banerjee called a meeting on 31 May, only 20 MLAs turned up.
- On June 3, 58 MLAs elected their own separate leader in the Assembly. The Speaker of the Assembly accepted this claim.
- And within no time this campaign got a name within the rebel camp, Operation Crown Prince.
Overall, the last and decisive chapter of the rebellion that started in Delhi, which had gained momentum on the basis of allegations of signature forgery, growing discontent within the organization and succession fight, was finally written within the Assembly itself.
After the MLAs, will the party MPs also give a shock?
Amidst the ongoing conflict within the Trinamool Congress in the politics of West Bengal, now the focus is on the MPs to see whether the MPs will also break after the legislative party. Recently, only four MPs of the party attended the protest program of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, due to which new questions have been raised within the organization.
The MPs who joined the protest included Derek O’Brien and Dola Sen from Rajya Sabha, while Kalyan Banerjee and Mala Roy from Lok Sabha. This number is considered quite low compared to the party’s larger parliamentary group.
At the same time, 7 party MLAs were present at the protest site. These included Firhad Hakim, Kunal Ghosh, Asima Patra, Ashok Dev, Nayana Bandyopadhyay, Madan Mitra and Sovandeb Chattopadhyay. Amid reports of displeasure and rebellious attitude of MLAs within the party, the limited presence of MPs has increased the discussion in the political corridors, although Trinamool Congress is still silent. Overall, the election results have uprooted TMC’s political nails, hence it is injured but not fatal.
Police action against many TMC leaders
Amidst the increasing troubles, the police is taking action against many TMC leaders, on the other hand, Mayor of Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation i.e. Salt Lake Municipality, Krishna Chakraborty has resigned from her post. Along with resigning, he claimed that 20 TMC MPs are ready to revolt.
TMC leader Tilak Kumar Chakraborty was arrested in a case of alleged fraud in the name of providing job in Haldia, East Medinipur. Police also arrested former TMC regional president Gautam Ghosh in Gogla area of Durgapur-Faridpur block. He is accused of post-poll violence, threatening local people and being associated with an illegal sand-coal syndicate. Apart from this, party leaders Paritosh Dutta and Rajib Banerjee have also been arrested.
NIA is also in action mode. Before the elections, the house and office of former TMC MLA Saukat Mollah was raided in connection with the bomb blast in the assembly in Bhangarh. NIA searched several locations in South 24 Parganas. One person was killed and three were injured in a crude bomb blast on March 19. It is alleged that bombs were being made there at the time of the incident.
