Microsoft is now taking a big step towards reducing the rising cost of Artificial Intelligence. Under this, the company is gradually using its own AI system in place of some models of OpenAI and Anthropic in popular workplace apps. According to a Bloomberg report, the company has started using its own MAI models to handle thousands of AI prompts in Microsoft Excel and Outlook every week. Earlier, these apps mostly depended on AI models of OpenAI and Anthropic for many smart features.
Microsoft This change is still quite small compared to total AI operations, but it reflects a change in strategy. As AI is being incorporated into products like ‘Copilot’, Microsoft is looking for ways to keep operating costs under control while reducing its reliance on external AI providers.
Microsoft wants cheap AI without compromising on performance
AI models use a lot of computing resources, and companies pay for their use based on AI tokens, units that measure how much processing an AI model does. For a company running AI services at the level of Microsoft, these costs can add up quickly. While Microsoft currently benefits from using OpenAI’s technology at a lower cost because of their long-term partnership, the company is also preparing for a future when relying too heavily on external AI models could prove costly.
Microsoft gives a lot of money to Anthropic
Microsoft’s AI Chief Mustafa Suleman has made the company’s intentions clear. He said, we pay a lot of money to Anthropic so our aim is to reduce that expenditure and ultimately eliminate it completely. He also pointed out that a lot of people in our company are spending millions of dollars on AI tokens, which shows how expensive it has become to implement AI on a large scale.
