Meta, one of the world’s largest social media companies, has reiterated its strict policy against child sexual exploitation material (CSAM). The company has clearly stated that soliciting, sharing or promoting such content on its platform is completely prohibited. This also includes attempts to spread such content through advertisements. Meta says that in such cases its zero tolerance policy applies and strict action is taken against those who violate the rules.
What was the matter?
A shocking thing came to light in the BBC report in which it was told that some such paid advertisements were seen on Instagram in which words like child video were used. The links accompanying the advertisement were taking users to a Telegram channel where obscene content was being sold. The report said that some of the content was available for as low as Rs 99.
Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has directed officials of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) to summon Meta. This step has been taken because some such advertisements were seen on Instagram in India in which obscene advertisements related to children were allegedly being promoted.
Surveillance is being done through AI technology
According to Meta, it is using advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to identify objectionable content on its platform. The AI system tries to detect suspicious activities and content that violates rules in advance, so that it can be removed in time. This is helping in making the platform more secure.
constant fight with criminals
The company says that its platform is used by about 3.5 billion people worldwide. Amidst such a large user base, some criminals try to misuse the platform by hiding their identity. Such people constantly adopt new ways to avoid the security system, hence Meta is also continuously strengthening its security technologies and monitoring system.
Emphasis on new technology and partnership
Meta said that its expert teams are developing new technology to identify criminals and remove them from the platform. Along with this, the company is also blocking links of those websites which promote content related to sexual exploitation of children. Meta is also sharing necessary information with other tech companies and related agencies, so that action can be taken jointly on such networks.
Trying to create a safe digital environment
The company says that its goal is to provide a safe online environment for all users, especially children and teenagers. Meta believes that through AI technology, strict regulations and collaboration with other companies, content related to sexual exploitation of children can be effectively banned.
