Kerala Student Murder: A promising daughter from Kerala, who had gone with the dream of pursuing higher education abroad, has been brutally murdered in Uzbekistan. Savaria Basant, a 22-year-old student studying first year MBBS at Bukhara State Medical Institute in Uzbekistan, was beaten to death by her own classmate. The shocking twist in this case came when Uzbek investigators revealed that the accused was pressurizing the deceased to convert to Islam. After the victim’s body was brought to Kerala, the local police registered a zero FIR case of murder on the complaint of the deceased’s parents and started investigation.
This entire painful incident took place in Bukhara city of Uzbekistan, where many students from Kerala and other parts of the country had gone to study medicine. Sawariya Basant (22), resident of Haripad in Alappuzha district of Kerala, and Sadrul Anam (22), resident of Malappuram district of Kerala, both were classmates in Bukhara State Medical Institute. On July 23, there was a heated argument between the two regarding some issue in the college campus. Enraged with anger, the accused Sadrul Anam made a fatal attack on Sawaria. He hit Sawaria several times on the head with a heavy laptop.
forced conversion angle
During the investigation by the Uzbek police, several eyewitness students have given statements that they had seen the suspected accused Sadrul pressurizing and torturing the student for forced religious conversion before the incident. Marks of serious injuries were found on the body of the deceased, which clearly shows that she was brutally beaten. As soon as the information about the incident was received, the distraught parents immediately reached Uzbekistan and after completing the legal formalities there, brought their daughter’s body to their home town Haripad.
Awaiting post mortem report
After the body reached Kerala on Wednesday, Sawaria’s post-mortem was conducted again at Alappuzha Medical College. The parents of the deceased say that their daughter did not die just because of laptop injury, but rather she was tortured to death. Senior police officer Binu Kumar said that based on the written complaint of the parents given to the district police chief, the police have registered a case of murder. Although the crime has taken place abroad, there are special provisions under Indian law to register a case here too. The parents of the deceased are demanding that the entire investigation of the case should be done by Kerala Police and the accused Sadrul Anam should be extradited from Uzbekistan to India.

Police in touch with Foreign Ministry and Indian Embassy
According to Kerala Police, the accused Sadrul Anam was arrested on the spot by the Uzbek police and he is currently in jail in Uzbekistan. Police officer Binu Kumar clarified that they are asking for all the documents and progress reports of the ongoing legal investigation in Uzbekistan through the Indian Embassy and the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
If the Uzbek administration completes strict legal action against the accused in the court there, then the case registered in Kerala will be technically closed. But, if there is any legal obstacle in getting justice to the victim’s family, then after taking legal advice from the Government of India, the process of extradition of the accused will be taken forward so that he can be punished under Indian law.
