
The commercial cargo ship MV GOLDEN LEO, which departed from Odessa port in Ukraine, has been attacked. In this attack, 4 Indian citizens were killed while one Indian was injured whose condition is critical. India has expressed displeasure regarding this incident. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Tuesday summoned Russia’s ambassador-in-charge and lodged a strong protest.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, on the evening of July 19, a ship named MV GOLDEN LEO was attacked. At that time the ship was leaving from Odessa port. A total of 17 crew members were present on the ship at the time of the incident, including five Indian citizens.
Foreign Ministry condemned
Expressing serious concern over this incident, the Ministry of External Affairs said that targeting commercial ships and endangering the lives of innocent civilians is completely unacceptable. The Foreign Ministry summoned Russia’s ambassador-in-charge in New Delhi, Vladimir Ladanov. The ministry described the attack on the ship as condemnable and demanded accountability for the deaths of its citizens.
The Foreign Ministry said that such attacks undermine the security, stability and safe movement of international maritime trade. India said that targeting commercial ships and endangering the lives of innocent civilian crew is highly condemnable. India clarified that such attacks should be avoided and no obstruction should be created in trade and movement of ships through sea routes.
All possible assistance to the affected people
The Ministry of External Affairs said that the Indian Embassy in Ukraine is closely monitoring the entire incident and is trying to provide all possible assistance to the affected people. The Ministry expressed its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased Indian citizens and wished speedy recovery to the injured Indian citizens.
Four Indians died in the attack
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiha had informed that on Sunday Russia had attacked a civilian ship passing through Ukraine and its crew included citizens of Syria and India. Four Indians died in this attack. This is the first case of death of Indian sailors in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The Ukrainian Air Force said that the Guinea-Bissau-flagged ship was attacked by Russian cruise missiles. The Ukrainian Air Force said that the Russian army fired three KH-59/KH-69 cruise missiles. This attack has happened at a time when the conflict between Russia and Ukraine is continuously increasing.
