MDMK breaks ties with DMK led alliance, decides to separate after 9 years

June 27, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) has decided to separate from the DMK-led alliance (SPA). Due to this the 9 year old alliance between the two parties has been broken. This decision was taken in a big meeting of the party held in Chennai under the chairmanship of MDMK general secretary Vaiko. By passing a resolution in the meeting, it was officially announced that DMK would withdraw from the alliance.

This step has been taken after the crushing defeat of DMK-led SPA in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. In this election, actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay’s party ‘Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam’ (TVK) had emerged as the largest party in the state. In the resolution, MDMK said it joined and remained in the alliance because it was “ideologically committed” to preventing “communal political forces” from gaining a foothold in Tamil Nadu.

The resolution stated that MDMK has been a part of the DMK-led alliance since the passing of a high-level committee resolution on December 3, 2017. The resolution said that during the recently held Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, efforts were made to weaken the MDMK’s independent political identity despite its 32-year political journey within the alliance. However, the party decided to stick with its allies and contest the elections.

Efforts to bring AIADMK to power

Referring to post-poll events, the MDMK accused the SPA of compromising its declared ideology and principles by “trying to bring the AIADMK to power”.

The resolution said, “It is well known that efforts were made to bring AIADMK to power by allying with Hindutva communal forces, even though it had won only 47 assembly seats. As a result, the Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA)’s claims of being an alliance based on ideology and principles became meaningless.”
