There was a stir in the Pentagon, the headquarters of the US Defense Ministry, on Thursday, when after the alert of toxic air quality, some parts of the US Defense Headquarters were evacuated and many levels were sealed, due to which action was started to completely remove the dangerous things. According to CNN and US officials, sensors inside the building picked up readings that indicated danger, triggering emergency protocols. Staff across the complex were asked to stay put while specialists went inside to assess the situation.
However, later according to sources, Hazmat crew was deployed due to false alarm. Initial reports later revealed that a false alarm triggered the hazmat response.
According to the report, the alert came in the middle of the work day and immediately spread throughout the building’s internal systems. in a few minutes Pentagon Many corridors were closed and response teams from several agencies arrived with detection equipment.
Corridor closed, chemical teams descended
Officials stressed that the action was taken as a precaution and that this had not been confirmed, but added that they could not take any risks until the source of the readings was understood and ruled out. Speaking to CNN, Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell confirmed that the system had detected something strange that needed to be addressed.
“The department is implementing standard protection protocols, including a shelter-in-place order for the affected area,” he said. Parnell also said response teams were present and ready to assist building occupants, making it clear that every decision was being taken with the safety of staff in mind.
Security teams took charge
In the notice sent to staff, the problem was described as simply an air quality issue and it was emphasized that further sampling would be required.
CNN reported that the lockdown affected floors 2 to 5, especially corridors 4 to 7, which are some of the most heavily used parts of the Pentagon. Access was closed while hazardous materials teams were working in the area. The officers were seen passing through the restricted zone in full chemical protection, including gas masks and suits as a safety measure, although the reason was not known.
Traffic stopped in many areas
At the time of reporting, officials did not know what triggered the sensors or whether anything harmful was actually present. Due to lack of response, shelter-in-place orders continued for the affected wings, with technicians continuing to conduct air tests and monitor readings in real time. The Department of Defense said it would exercise caution until investigators were certain there was no threat.
Reports revealed that the corridor was cordoned off, movement was restricted, and updates were being filtered while crews were doing their work. The Pentagon described the response as a standard, rapid response to any potential environmental threat, and said the priority was to rescue everyone in the building before resuming operations. Investigation was underway to find out the reason for Thursday’s alarm.
