Civil society groups, social activists and common people have alleged that 65-year-old hotel cook Keshav Singh Negi is being made a “scapegoat” to save influential hotel owners, Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) officials and police personnel.
A total of 23 people died in the incident that took place on June 3, including eight members of the Agarwal family and 15 foreign nationals from Nigeria, Kyrgyzstan, Mozambique, Uzbekistan, Bangladesh, Congo, Liberia and Iraq. More than 30 people have been seriously injured.
Police made five serious allegations against Keshav
Police allege that hotel cook Keshav fled from there after closing the door and switching off the power switch when the fire broke out. Five serious criminal charges have been imposed on him and he has been sent to judicial custody for 14 days. This move has been criticized a lot.
Critics say that the main responsibility for fire safety lapses and violation of rules lies with the hotel management and owners, and not with any low-level employee working there.
