The company will not charge this fee from everyone, this fee will be charged only from those who have not used the wallet for a long time. The company has recently changed the rules related to wallet. According to the new rule, if any user who has an account on PhonePe does not use the wallet for 365 days, then an inactivity maintenance fee of Rs 100 will be charged. In simple words, if there is no financial transaction from the wallet for a year then that wallet will be considered ‘inactive’.

The fee of Rs 100 will be applicable only on those users who have not done any wallet transaction for a year. Merely opening the PhonePe app or making a UPI payment will not count as wallet activity. Users will need to complete a wallet transaction to reactivate their account and avoid charges.

PhonePe users will be given 15 days notice before deducting the fee. If there is sufficient balance in the wallet then the company can directly deduct the charge, if the balance is less than Rs 100 then PhonePe will take the available amount and the wallet balance will become zero instead of going into negative.

According to India Today report, PhonePe is not the first company to impose fees, inactivity fee is not a new thing in the digital payment industry. MobiKwik did something similar in 2021.
