Devendra Fadnavis government of Maharashtra has given a big gift to the women involved in farming. The bill giving the status of farmers to women ‘Women Farmers Bill-2026’ has been passed. With this, Maharashtra has also become the first state in the country to do so. Interestingly, the opposition has also supported this bill. With the passing of this bill, now women farmers of the state will be recognized as registered women farmers.
Due to patriarchal culture, there are often cases of unjust treatment of women working in villages. Women working in the fields have always been seen as agricultural labourers. If we talk about Maharashtra, the percentage of agricultural land in the name of women in the state is very less. Therefore, the percentage of registered women getting recognized as farmers in the state is also low.
Women farmers will get these benefits
- Keeping this in mind, the government took a big and historic decision. The Women Farmers Empowerment Bill 2026, introduced by the state government in this monsoon session, has been passed. Now after this bill, women will also get recognition as farmers. Now only men will not be farmers. Women working in the fields will also be recognized as women farmers.
- The government is engaged in efforts to formulate a comprehensive policy to protect the rights of women farmers and promote their all-round empowerment. This bill was introduced as part of these efforts. Now this bill has been passed.
- Many important provisions have been made in the Maharashtra Women Farmers Empowerment Bill-2026 for the empowerment of women farmers. Since women do not have land in their names, they are not able to avail the benefits of many schemes. After the passing of this bill this problem will go away.
- This bill will seek to recognize women engaged in allied occupations like fisheries, animal husbandry, poultry and forest produce collection as farmers. The bill also has a provision for Maharashtra State Mahila Kisan Fund for the women farmers of the state.
Separate identity card for women farmers
Lakhs of women farmers in the state will be given separate identity cards. This will be an effort to protect their rights. In future, efforts will be made to ensure that women’s names are mentioned on 7/12 parts of agricultural land.
