Maharashtra government has taken a big decision in matters related to passive euthanasia (mercy death) and living will. The government has issued orders for the formation of special medical committees in all government and private hospitals of the state as per the guidelines of the Supreme Court. The purpose of this decision is to protect the rights of patients, ensure the right to die with dignity and take decisions related to life-saving treatment through a transparent and legal process.
According to the new order of the Maharashtra government, now in cases related to passive euthanasia, decisions will not be taken on the basis of the opinion of any one doctor. For this, a special medical committee of expert doctors will be formed, which will conduct a detailed and impartial review of every case.
This decision will be applicable to private hospitals also
The government has decided to implement this system in government hospitals as well as private hospitals. Under this, private hospitals will also have to respect the living will already registered by the patient.
There will be a uniform legal system throughout the state
The government says that with this step a uniform legal system will be implemented in the entire state. The constitutional rights of patients will be protected. Sensitive decisions like continuation or withdrawal of life-saving treatment can be taken in a transparent, accountable and prescribed legal process.
