Ujjain Mahakal Temple: There is a city in India where Mahakal, the god of death himself, resides. The name of this city is Ujjain. Ujjain is a district of Madhya Pradesh state. There is Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga temple here. It is considered one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. Mahakal is considered the king of Ujjain. In Ujjain, from the south facing Mahakaleshwar Jyotirling to the Bhasma Aarti, Lord Shiva resides in every nook and corner.

There are many secrets of this temple which surprise people. This is the only Jyotirlinga among the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, which is south facing, but do you know why it is so? If not then let us know the secret of this south facing Jyotirlinga.

a cosmic declaration

Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga is the only Jyotirlinga in India which faces south. The south facing direction of this Jyotirlinga is not just a symbolic gesture, but it is considered a cosmic declaration. It tells one much about the deep spiritual structure of time, death, fear and rebirth.

Here Kaal has to take permission from Mahakaal

There is such a power inherent in it, which devotees can not only see but also feel in their breath and their emotions after darshan. There is a mythological belief that before entering this area, even ‘Kaal’ (death) itself has to take permission from Lord Shiva i.e. Mahakaal. Due to facing south, Mahadev is worshiped here as the one who averts the fear of death and untimely death (provider of salvation).

The fear of untimely death ends

According to a story related to Mahakal, once a king named Chandrasen ruled Ujjain. He was a great devotee of Lord Shiva. God appeared here in his Mahakaal form and destroyed the enemies of the king. Then on the request of the devotees, Shiva started residing here and started being called the king of this place. Mahakal temple is mentioned in many ancient poetic texts. It is believed that seeing Mahakaal eliminates the fear of untimely death.
