Lucknow coaching fire case reaches Allahabad High Court, advocate makes this demand to Chief Justice

June 24, 2026 by Uma Shankar

The case of the tragic coaching fire incident in Lucknow has now reached Allahabad High Court. Advocate Gaurav Dwivedi has filed a letter petition in the High Court and has demanded the Chief Justice to take cognizance of the petition and give necessary guidelines. In the petition, questions have been raised regarding the ignorance and arbitrariness of standards, which also includes questions regarding the security arrangements of multi-storey buildings along with coaching institutes. In the petition, a demand has been made to issue a detailed guideline regarding preparations to deal with situations like possible fire in shopping complexes and crowded areas and also to give necessary guidelines to prepare a quick action plan on receiving information about incidents like fire.

Advocate Gaurav Dwivedi, who filed the petition, said in this case that the failure of the administrative system is clearly visible in the way incidents of fire are continuously coming to light in the state. He said that parents send their children to study in coaching institutes to improve their future, but due to ignorance of safety standards, the happiness of many families gets ruined at once.

He alleged that a large number of coaching institutes in the state are running in such houses where there are no adequate arrangements for fire safety if needed. Many institutions are running in basements, where basic facilities like emergency exits are not available in case of fire.

15 children died tragically

15 children aged between 16 to 25 years died tragically in a fire in a commercial building in Aliganj area of Lucknow on the afternoon of June 22. The fire started inside the building and spread so fast that the children did not get a chance to come out.

Order to demolish the building was issued in 2016

When this incident was investigated, it was found that the building in which the fire broke out was illegal. An order to demolish that building was issued in the year 2016 itself, but later the order was also cancelled. Lucknow Development Authority VC Prathamesh Kumar said that a notice has been issued to the building owner and a reply has been sought within 15 days. After this, a bulldozer will run on the building and it will be demolished. At the same time, after the incident, massive raids are going on in coaching centers and hotels across the state. So far, more than 45 coaching institutes and hotels have been sealed which did not have adequate fire protection arrangements.
