
The Central Government has appointed Lieutenant General Dheeraj Seth as the next ‘Chief of Army Staff’ of the Indian Army. Seth is currently working as ‘Vice Chief of Army Staff’. He will replace the current Army Chief, General Upendra Dwivedi. The tenure of General Upendra Dwivedi is till June 2026. He took over the post of Army Chief on June 30, 2024. The tenure of the Army Chief is three years or till the age of 62 years, whichever is earlier.
Presently Lieutenant General Dheeraj Seth is serving as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff. He is an alumnus of the National Defense Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla and was commissioned into the Armored Corps in December 1986. In his nearly four decade long military career, he has worked in many important areas related to operational, strategic and modernization.
Lieutenant General Dheeraj Seth has commanded at every level in the army. He commanded the Armored Regiment in the desert area, the Armored Brigade on the Western Front and the Counter Insurgency Force in Jammu and Kashmir. After becoming Lieutenant General, he led the Sudarshan Chakra Corps, the main strike formation of the Indian Army. Apart from this, he was also the General Officer Commanding of Delhi Area, where he took responsibility of many national and international military programs.
Who is Lieutenant General Dheeraj Seth?
An alumnus of the National Defense Academy at Khadakwasla in Maharashtra’s Pune district, Dheeraj Seth was commissioned into the Armored Corps in December 1986. During his career spanning nearly four decades, he has gained immense experience of working in diverse terrains and difficult situations, including counter-terrorism operations. Dheeraj Seth has about 40 years of military experience. He has commanded in many sensitive areas including the desert, Jammu and Kashmir and the Western Front.
Contribution to modernization and capacity development of the army
As Army Commander, he commanded the South Western Command and Southern Command. He is one of the few officers who got the opportunity to lead two operational army commands. Lieutenant General Seth is also known for his contribution in the modernization and capability development of the army. He worked on many important positions related to strategic planning and capability development in the Army Headquarters. He played an important role in the long term modernization plan of the Army and capacity building as per future war requirements.
Excellent performance in many prestigious military courses
He has excelled in many prestigious military courses. He is a graduate of Higher Command Course and National Defense College. Apart from this, he has also done the prestigious Command and Staff Course in Paris. Lieutenant General Dheeraj Seth took over as Deputy Chief of the Army on 1 April 2026. Now he has been appointed as the next chief of the Indian Army.
