According to the legend, in Dwaparayuga there was a city named Mahishmati. There was the rule of a king named Mahijit. The king used to perform virtuous deeds and take good care of his subjects. The king had only one sorrow that he had no children. To get a son, the king performed many donations, yagyas etc., but he could not get a child. One day the king consulted learned Brahmins and subjects on this subject. The king said that I have no children. What will be my speed now?
Hearing this the Brahmins said, O King! We will try to find a solution to this problem. After this, all the people went to the forest with the Brahmins to fulfill the king’s wish. He met a great sage in the forest. He was Lomash Rishi and was doing penance. Then everyone said to him, O Munivar! The name of our king is Mahijit. He has no children. O Maharishi, please suggest some solution by which our Maharaj can get the happiness of having a child. After listening to the people, Maharishi Lomash told about the fast of Krishnapingal Sankashti in the month of Ashadh for the king.
Also asked to worship Lord Ganesha. Maharishi said that by observing this fast, worshiping, hosting a Brahmin feast and doing charity, the king will definitely get the happiness of having a child. After this everyone returned to the city and told the king the solution suggested by Maharishi. The king was very happy after knowing the solution. Then he observed a fast on Krishnapingal Sankashti Chaturthi. After some time, the king’s wife Queen Sudakshina was blessed with a beautiful and graceful son.
