Where the prices of tomatoes have become twice as expensive in the country’s capital Delhi. On the other hand, the average price of tomatoes in the country has increased by 18 percent in the month of June. Whereas an average increase of more than 10 percent has been seen in onion prices. This means that the excessive heat in the country has started showing its effects. It has also started affecting the pockets of common people. Due to the death of experts, the inflation rate for the month of June is likely to increase in the coming days. Its effect will also be seen in food inflation. How much did potato, onion and tomato become expensive?
The prices of tomatoes, onions and potatoes are increasing again, due to which concerns about the inflation of food items have increased. According to Consumer Affairs Ministry data, the average retail price of tomato has increased by 18 percent, onion by 11 percent and potato by 1.3 percent in the last month. The share of these three vegetables in the consumer price index is 1.75 percent. On a year-on-year basis, tomato prices have increased by 25 per cent and onion prices by 3.3 per cent, while potato prices are down by 17 per cent.
Tomato becomes twice as expensive in Delhi
Tomatoes have become costlier by up to 50 per cent in states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh, while prices have almost doubled in Delhi as the scorching heat damaged yields and disrupted supplies. Onion prices have increased by 10-20 percent in many states after unseasonal rains affected the storage quality of the crop. There is a seasonal increase in the prices of onion and tomato during monsoon depending on the arrival, spread and intensity of monsoon. The scorching heat caused by El Nino and delayed rains has affected the delicate tomato crop the most.
Why did potato, onion and tomato become expensive?
Azadpur Onion Traders Association President Ashok Kaushik said that not only has the supply reduced, but transportation of tomatoes to remote areas has also become difficult because due to the heat, these fruits ripen quickly. The supply of tomatoes coming to Delhi from Rajasthan and Haryana has reduced. If experts are to be believed, there may be further increase in the prices of tomatoes and onions in the coming days.
