There are signs of a big change coming in British politics. Labor Party leader and Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham won the election from Makerfield seat in north-west England on Friday. By-elections were held here on June 18. After this victory, the way has been opened for him to challenge Prime Minister Keir Starmer in the future and become the leader of the Labor Party.
56 year old Andy Burnham is also called ‘King of the North’. He secured 24,927 votes in the election. In second place was the candidate of Nigel Farage’s Reform UK Party, who got 15,696 votes. After the victory, Burnham warned his own party that this was the last chance for change. He said, I want to tell my party that this is the last opportunity for change. There will be no second chance after this.
What is the reason for Burnham’s popularity?
Burnham has long been in favor of strengthening government services and bringing some key services under government control. He believes that the economic policies of the last 40 years have not been successful for the common people. He has also said earlier that he may try to replace Keir Starmer in the future.
At the same time, the popularity of Prime Minister Keir Starmer is continuously declining. Starmer, who came to power with a major victory two years ago, has been accused of changing policies several times, delaying decisions and weak leadership. For this reason his popularity has fallen to record levels.
One-fourth of MPs against Starmer
The Labor Party suffered a big loss in the local elections held last month. After this, about one-fourth of the party’s MPs demanded Starmer to step down. In recent weeks, many senior leaders, including the Defense Minister and the Health Minister, have also resigned, raising questions on his leadership. However, Starmer has made it clear that if the leadership election is held, he will contest. He has warned that a leadership fight within the party could lead to huge controversy and chaos in the Labor Party.
According to Labor Party rules, to trigger a leadership challenge, at least 81 MPs, or 20% of the party’s MPs, will have to come in support of any one candidate. In such a situation, a big change can be seen in British politics in the coming months.
Why might Burnham replace Starmer?
The Labor Party suffered a major setback in the recently held local elections in Britain. After this, questions started being raised on Starmer’s leadership within the party. Many MPs want the party to get a new face. In such a situation, Andy Burnham is being seen as the leader to replace Starmer. But it’s not easy for Burnham. There is increasing anger among people in Britain regarding inflation, weak economy and increasing immigration. The Reform UK Reform Party is benefiting from this. The leader of this party is Nigel Farage, who gives strict statements against immigration. His party is becoming increasingly strong in the national survey.
