Kachaudi Gali Song History: In today’s era, most of the songs become trends on social media for a few weeks and then disappear. But sometimes a tune not only reaches the ears but also reaches those corners of history which the world has almost forgotten. Coke Studio Bharat’s new song ‘Kachori Gali’ is also something similar. When heard for the first time, it seems to be a beautiful folk tune wandering in the streets of Banaras, but as its words sink into the heart, a painful story hidden behind it starts to emerge.
Rekha Bhardwaj And this song sung by Utpal Udit is not just music, but is also a memory of thousands of Indian families whose lives were changed forever by the First Anglo-Burmese War. The story of the song is about a woman standing in the famous ‘Kachori Gali’ of Banaras, who is watching her husband leaving with the British Army. Her husband was not a soldier, nor did he want to be a part of any war. But like thousands of Indian men during the British era, he too was forcefully pushed into a battle that was not his own.
story behind the song
When the First Anglo-Burmese War started in 1824, the British Army needed a large number of soldiers. During that period, common people were recruited from Bihar, Purvanchal and surrounding areas. Many people were sent to Rangoon with the promise of wages, jobs and a better life, while many were forced to become part of the army under pressure. Historical data shows that the British contingent of about 10 thousand soldiers included more than 5 thousand Indian soldiers, who were taken to Rangoon by sea.
mention of separated families
But, the story hidden behind these figures was not just about war, but about families getting separated. In many streets of Banaras, Mirzapur and North India, women remained waiting for their husbands. No one knew whether he would return or not. Even among those who returned, many were not the same as before. The war was not fought only on the battlefield, its impact was also felt in those homes where the stoves kept burning, but the absence of a loved one was always felt.

Fragrance of Banaras
This new track of the fourth season of Coke Studio Bharat is not just a song, but the painful story of thousands of families whose stories could never make a place in the history books. ‘Kachori Gali’ brings out this pain very beautifully. The fragrance of old streets of Banaras, folk language and Bhojpuri soil is clearly felt in the song. This is the reason why this song is not just heard, but also becomes a feeling. There is sadness in its tune, there is waiting and there is also that silence, which was the part of those families whose loved ones never returned.
forgotten and remembered fresh
Interesting thing is that during that period, dissatisfaction started increasing among the Indian soldiers also. The Barrackpore rebellion of 1824 was a reflection of this tension, when many Indian soldiers refused to go to Burma. But, the British suppressed it strictly. Many soldiers were punished and some were even put to death. There is very little mention of the pain of these families in history books. Perhaps this is the reason why ‘Kachori Gali’ today has become not just a song, but the return of those forgotten voices, which were buried in silence with time.
