Why is Nirjala Ekadashi considered special?
The fast of Nirjala Ekadashi is counted among the most difficult fasts. On this day, fasting people worship Lord Vishnu without consuming food or water. According to religious texts, observing this fast destroys sins and opens the way to attain salvation. It is believed that during the Mahabharata period, Bhimsen had observed this fast on the advice of Maharishi Vedvyas. For this reason it is also known as Bhimseni Ekadashi.
What to do during Ekadashi fast?
On the day of Ekadashi, take bath in the morning and worship Lord Vishnu and Mother Lakshmi. Offer yellow flowers, basil leaves and bhog. Reciting Vishnu Sahasranama, Geeta or chanting Om Namo Bhagwate Vasudevaya mantra is considered auspicious. Donating food, clothes and money to needy people also brings virtuous results.
