Suzuki Motor President Toshihiro Suzuki will also be among the officials traveling with him. During this tour, Takaichi will attend the annual summit with PM Narendra Modi in Assam. During this, both the countries will discuss increasing economic cooperation and investment in the North-East under the Act East Policy. Let us tell you that Takaichi had taken over as PM in October last year. After this, this will be his first bilateral visit to India.
Why Guwahati for talks?
According to sources, Guwahati has been chosen as the venue because Japan is working on projects in the North East under India’s Act East policy. Let us tell you that during the G7 Summit last week, PM Modi met his Japanese counterpart in France. After this he said that he had a wonderful conversation with Takaichi. PM Modi said that India and Japan will continue to further strengthen relations in various fields by giving priority to trade and investment.
Former Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe was to visit Guwahati in December 2019. But at that time his tour was canceled due to protests against CAA and NRC. Let us tell you that Shinzo Abe is considered the guru of Takaichi. Ever since Takaichi became the Prime Minister of Japan, he and PM Modi have met a few times in the last 8 months.
PM Modi had talked to Takaichi in October last year. Both the leaders had agreed to increase economic security, defense cooperation and exchange of talent between the two countries. After this, both the leaders also met during the G-20 summit held in South Africa in November. Takaichi is a radical conservative leader of Japan. He replaced former Prime Minister Ishiba.
In July, Japan’s old ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) suffered a crushing defeat in the upper house elections. After this the party lost its majority in the lower house also. Takaichi joined the LDP party in 1996. She became a cabinet minister for the first time during the tenure of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. Before this, she had been the Minister of State for Okinawa and Northern Region Affairs.
Takaichi became the first woman to lead the Policy Research Council of the LDP party. Apart from this, she is also the leader who has served the longest as the Home Minister of Japan. Takaichi was the Economic Security Minister of Japan from 2022 to 2024. His tenure as PM will be only for the same period that was left in the three-year tenure of former Prime Minister Ishiba. PM Modi visited Japan in August 2025.
During this time he met the then Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba. During this period, both the countries had signed many important agreements including a 10-year roadmap to promote defense relations and economic partnership. India hopes that Japan’s new PM Takaichi will also continue these promises and agreements. India wants the new PM to follow Abe’s old policies.
