Jamaat-e-Islami banned
In February 2024, the central government extended the ban on Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu and Kashmir for another five years under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), and declared it an unlawful organisation. Jamaat-e-Islami is accused of being involved in activities related to terrorism, separatism and anti-India propaganda. The ban was extended for the next five years when the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) found that the organization was continuing its activities against the security, integrity and sovereignty of the country.
This organization was first declared an ‘unlawful organization’ on February 28, 2019. According to HA, Jamaat-e-Islami is in close contact with terrorist organizations and is continuously promoting extremism and terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir. It is supporting demands for secession of a part of Indian territory from the Union and supporting terrorist and separatist groups fighting for this purpose. By doing so it is indulging in activities and statements that harm the territorial integrity of India.
