Jagannath Favorite Flowers: The grand festival of Lord Jagannath’s Rath Yatra in Puri, Odisha will begin from July 16 and is scheduled to continue till July 24. On this auspicious occasion, devotees from Puri Dham across the country will worship Lord Jagannath, Balram and Subhadra Devi. In Sanatan Dharma it is believed that God is pleased by the rituals of devotion. However, every goddess has her own favorite flowers and objects. According to the scriptures and the age-old tradition of the Puri temple, Lord Jagannath God has some special favorite flowers, on worshiping which he becomes happy immediately.

If you also want to worship Lord Jagannath at home or in the temple, then know about the list of favorite flowers of Lord Jagannath and the flowers prohibited in his worship. Lord Jagannath is actually an incarnation of Lord Vishnu or Krishna, hence like Lord Vishnu, Tulsi leaves are very dear to the feet of Lord Jagannath. Without Tulsi, the worship of Lord Mahaprabhu or the 56 offerings remain incomplete.

Apart from this, the lotus flower is supreme in his worship. Lotus flower is considered a symbol of purity and beauty, offering which to Lord Mahaprabhu fulfills the wishes of the devotee’s heart. Lord Mahaprabhu likes fragrant flowers very much. These flowers are used in daily decoration and worship rituals in Puri temple.

These flowers are dear to Lord Jagannath

Jasmine and Malti: These white fragrant flowers are used in making garlands for Lord Mahaprabhu every day.

Champa: Lord Jagannath likes the fragrance of Champa flowers very much.

Parijaat: These flowers are widely used in worship and decoration.

Kadamba and Tuberose: Kadamba flower is the favorite of Lord Krishna and has special significance in Jagannath puja.

According to people associated with the Jagannath sect of Puri, apart from Tulsi, a fragrant leaf called ‘Dayana’ is especially used in the worship of Lord Mahaprabhu. Apart from this, every night before sleeping, a special ‘Banmala’ made of fragrant flowers and basil is offered to Lord Mahaprabhu, which is called ‘Banmala Besh’.

Which flowers are prohibited during Jagannath Puja?

Datura and Aak: Although these flowers are used in Shiva worship, their use is prohibited in Jagannath worship.

Java flower: The red Java flower dear to Goddess Kali is not usually used in the worship of Lord Jagannath.

Ketaki or Kiya: According to mythological beliefs, the use of Ketaki flowers is prohibited in the worship of Vishnu or Krishna.

According to the scriptures, if you devoutly offer even a basil leaf and a fresh lotus flower at the feet of Lord Mahaprabhu, Lord Jagannath becomes extremely pleased and grants happiness, prosperity and peace of mind to the devotee.
