Every year, a different enthusiasm is seen among the devotees regarding the world famous Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath starting from Ashadh Shukla Dwitiya. In the year 2026, this grand Rath Yatra is going to start from 16th July and will conclude with Bahuda Yatra on 24th July. There are many colors to this 9-day festival, but a very unique and sweet tradition is performed on the last day of the Rath Yatra. on this day Lord Jagannath Rasgulla is especially offered. What is the tradition of Niladri BJ?
During the Rath Yatra, Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Mata Subhadra visit their maternal aunt’s house i.e. Gundicha Temple. After staying there for a few days, return back to Shrimandir through Bahuda Yatra. When Lord Jagannath reaches the main gate of the temple, his wife Mata Lakshmi gets angry with him. It is believed that Lord had gone for several days without taking her with him, hence Goddess Lakshmi closes the door of the temple and does not allow him to enter immediately. On this, Lord Jagannath offers Rasgulla to appease him. After this, Mother Lakshmi becomes happy and opens the doors of the temple and welcomes the Lord again. This tradition is called Neeladri Bije.
Why is Rasgulla offered only on the 9th day?
It takes approximately nine days from the beginning of the Rath Yatra till the Lord returns to the Shrimandir. On the last day when God returns to his abode, Rasgulla is offered to please Goddess Lakshmi. Therefore, the tradition of offering Rasgulla is followed on the ninth day of the Rath Yatra. It is not only a religious ritual, but is also considered a symbol of love, respect and a beautiful tradition of celebrating relationships between husband and wife.
Religious significance of Rasgulla tradition
It is believed that offering Rasgulla to Lord Jagannath brings love, harmony and happiness in the family. Devotees offer Rasgulla to God on this day and pray for happiness, prosperity and well-being of the family. This occasion is celebrated with great enthusiasm in Odisha. At many places it is also given special importance as Rasgulla Day. Rasgulla is offered to God and distributed as Prasad in temples and homes.
