Snana Purnima 2026: Snan Purnima Festival celebrated at Lord Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha is considered one of the most important religious events of the year. This festival is not only a special puja but also marks the beginning of the world famous Jagannath Rath Yatra. In the year 2026, the festival of Snan Purnima will be celebrated on 29 June. On this day, a grand consecration of Lord Jagannath, elder brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra will be done with the water of 108 sacred urns. Lakhs of devotees from India and abroad reach Puri to witness this divine ritual. According to Drik Panchang, in the year 2026, the Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath is going to start from Thursday, July 16, which will conclude on July 24, 2026.

What is Snan Purnima?

Snan Purnima, also known as Snan Yatra, is celebrated on the full moon day of Jyeshtha month. on this day Lord JagannathThe idols of Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra are brought out of the sanctum sanctorum of the temple and placed on a special bathing altar. After this, their sacred anointment is performed with Vedic mantras and traditional rituals. There is a religious belief that by seeing and worshiping God on this day, one gets special blessings and the wishes of the devotees are fulfilled.

Maha Abhishek is done with 108 urns

The most important attraction of Snan Purnima is the anointment of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra with the holy water of 108 Kalash. It is believed that these Kalash are filled with water specially brought from the holy well in the temple premises. The Lord is bathed amidst Vedic mantras, to see which a large number of devotees are present.

Why can’t God be seen after bathing?

According to religious tradition, Lord Jagannath is believed to get fever after Mahaabhishek. For this reason they are taken for rest for about 15 days. This period is called Anavasar. These days, God is not seen daily in the temple and special service is done to him.

Preparations for Rath Yatra begin from here

With Snan Purnima, preparations for the world famous Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath intensify. After the end of Anvasar period, God appears in a new form to the devotees, which is called Navayauvana Darshan. After this, a grand Rath Yatra is organised, in which Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra travel to the Gundicha temple riding on their respective chariots.

Religious significance of Snan Purnima

In Sanatan tradition, Snan Purnima is considered the day to receive the special blessings of Lord Jagannath. On this day devotees wish for happiness, peace and prosperity through darshan, worship and devotion of God. Many devotees also donate to charity on this occasion and participate in religious events.
