Jagannath Rath Yatra 2026: Every year, on the second day of Shukla Paksha of Ashadh month, the holy festival of his Rath Yatra is celebrated in the temple of Lord Jagannath in Puri, Odisha. There is a mythological story behind Jagannath ji falling ill every year. According to this story, there used to be a great devotee of Lord Jagannath. His name was Madhav Das. Madhav Das was suffering from a disease for a long time. He prayed to his deity. He asked Lord Jagannath to remove his sufferings. On this, God told him that due to the deeds of his previous birth, he still had 15 days of illness left.
God took upon himself the illness of devotee Madhav Das.
Lord Jagannath told his devotee that he would be free from the disease only after 15 days, but seeing his devotee’s suffering, his heart melted. It is believed that after this, God himself took upon himself the illness of Madhav Das for the last 15 days. As a result, Madhav Das became healthy. Since then, the tradition of Lord Jagannath falling ill for 15 days after Snan Purnima has been going on.
