AI is everywhere and ever since it came into existence, it has completely changed the job market. This year, more than 1,20,000 tech workers have lost their jobs in big companies. Amazon, Meta, Oracle, TCS, the list is long. But they say that if you have skill then the world will ask you, something similar is now happening with Gen Z electricians. According to Mike Roe, founder of the Dirty Jobs TV show, AI companies are ready to pay millions to Gen Z electricians.
at a time when AI While the increase in demand for tools has impacted white collar jobs, Rowe claims there is strong demand for blue collar work, including electricians. The electricians I interviewed and met two months ago at a data center in Plano, Texas, were all under the age of 30 and all earned $240,000 (about Rs 2.3 crore) to $280,000 (about Rs 2.7 crore) per year, he said on the Power Players Podcast.
The TV host claimed that these Gen Z electricians didn’t have to worry about student loans and were often approached by other companies. They can work as much overtime as they want, he explained, and no one is owed anything.
What is the reason?
To run AI models, companies need infrastructure, especially AI data centers containing thousands of GPUs. Companies are building more and more data centers to meet the demand. This has increased the demand for on-site electricians, welders and construction managers. Deloitte found that data center job postings are expected to increase by 64 percent between 2023 and 2025, while electrical technician postings are expected to increase by more than 180 percent.
According to a Fortune report, construction workers on data center projects are earning about 32 percent or $81,800 (about Rs 78 lakh) more annually than traditional construction workers in the US. There is an expectation of increase in data centers in India also. While Google has announced the $15 billion Google AI Hub project in Visakhapatnam, Meta is building its data centers in partnership with Reliance Jio.
