Chief Justice of Delhi High Court D.K. The bench of Justice Upadhyay and Justice Tejas Karia said that this decision of WFI raises many questions, unlike the way famous players were earlier given permission to participate in competitions. The court also asked the central government to ensure that Vinesh Phogat, who is returning after maternity break, gets a chance to participate in the upcoming Asian Games selection trials.
The court said that becoming a mother is considered a matter of happiness in the country, hence the federation should not work with any player out of vendetta. The government lawyer said that under the rules of Sports Authority of India, the eligibility rules can be relaxed in some cases. After this, the court asked the central government to form a committee of experts to investigate Vinesh Phogat’s case.
WFI accused Vinesh Phogat of indiscipline
This controversy started when the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) banned Vinesh Phogat from participating in domestic competitions till June, accusing her of indiscipline and violation of rules. Vinesh moved court against this. During the hearing of the case, the High Court said that the interest of the players and the game should be above any dispute.
Why is it banned?
Wrestling Federation (WFI) says that Vinesh Phogat did not follow the rules and broke discipline. According to the association, every player returning after retirement has to give information 6 months in advance, but Vinesh did not do so. For this reason he was banned from playing till June. Earlier on Monday, the court also did not allow him to play immediately in the Asian Games trials on 30 and 31 May, because the WFI had already banned him.
