Qatar has justified the Iranian toll system in Hormuz. Speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue, Qatar’s Deputy Prime Minister said that the temporary toll system cannot be called wrong. Qatar says that landmines are laid beneath the ground in Hormuz. It will cost to remove it. If Iran removes it within 30 days under the agreement, it will have to spend a lot of money. Who will give this money to Iran? According to the Deputy Prime Minister of Qatar, Iran can charge a temporary toll from Hormuz for this.
What is the toll system in Hormuz?
Amidst the war with America, Iran blocked the Strait of Hormuz. Hormuz is the gateway to the Persian Gulf. Through this narrow 34 kilometer route, the ship leaves the Persian Gulf and enters the Gulf of Oman. According to estimates, 20 percent of the world’s oil is supplied through Hormuz.
Iran announced to build a toll booth here during the war. After this, Iran took 10 lakh dollars each from the ships passing through this route in lieu of transit fees.
Iran has also announced the creation of a department in the government to further maintain the toll system. This department has been placed under the Islamic Revolutionary Guard.
However, America opposes it. America says that this is against international rules. Iran cannot recover money through natural routes. The US President has also threatened Oman regarding this.
No mention of toll in the agreement proposal
There is no mention of Hormuz toll in the agreement proposal being prepared between Iran and America. According to the proposal, Iran cannot collect toll in Hormuz. In return, economic sanctions on Iran will be removed. Apart from this, the proposal given by America to Iran also talks about ending uranium enrichment.
