Israel has launched a major attack in Gaza targeting the new military chief of Hamas Mohammad Odeh. The attack came just 11 days after the death of Hamas’ previous leader Izzy al-Din al-Haddad. Al-Haddad was killed in an Israeli attack on Gaza City on May 15. After this, Mohammad Odeh was made the new head of the military wing of Hamas and the organization in Gaza.
On Tuesday evening, Israel carried out an airstrike in the Rimal area, western part of Gaza City. According to Gaza’s Civil Defense Agency, at least three people died and 20 were injured in the attack. This agency works under the control of Hamas. Hamas did not immediately give any statement on this attack. Israel also did not officially confirm Odeh’s death. However, Israeli media reports claimed that according to initial information, the attack was successful and Odeh was killed.
Netanyahu issued a statement
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz issued a joint statement saying that Mohammad Odeh was the head of Hamas’s intelligence branch during the attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023. Israel alleges that he was responsible for the killing, kidnapping and attacks on many Israeli civilians and soldiers.
According to Saudi media reports, Odeh was a close associate of al-Haddad. He helped strengthen the organization after the death of old Hamas leaders Muhammad Deif and Muhammad Sinwar. The report said that after Sinwar’s death in May 2025, Odeh received an offer to take over the leadership of the al-Qassam Brigades, but he initially refused. Later he was given this responsibility.
Israel has targeted Odeh before also
According to Israeli reports, Odeh had worked to gather information about Israeli military bases and military weaknesses near the Gaza border before the October 7 attack. His age is said to be between 40 and 50 years and he was associated with Hamas since childhood.
Israel has targeted Odeh several times before. In 2025, his elder son Amr was killed in an attack on his father’s house. Israel has said that it will find and take action against everyone involved in the October 7 attack.
